Photo Night: Moon Shots

Here it is, Photo Night again already. This week I didn't actively stalk my surroundings to take new photos, so I've pulled together a few I've taken over the past few months.

At different times on different evenings, when the full moon hovered over the backyard and challenged me to capture a decent photo of it, I took dozens of moon shots. Most of them were blurry and awful. I haven't read up on nighttime photography, and I couldn't usually hold the camera steady enough to take crisp photos. Still, I got lucky a few times. I'm not sure how many photos of the full moon anybody needs, so I've just picked out a few and will toss 'em your way.

Yesterday, I took my camera to work. Coincidentally, there was a plumber there, bending over while he worked on my leaky toilet. So here, as the grand finale for the Moon Shots theme, I present...

Nah, just kidding. I thought seriously about it but couldn't bring myself to take a picture of the plumber in the end.

  1. Those are fabulous! Please tell me how you did it, though I'm not sure this camera is capable. There are some nights when we have a full moon I would love to get some shots! Course I was *really* excited about that last one until I realized it was just a tease...Carmon

  3. Those last two shots are beautiful. The second to last one so eerie, it seems I can hear wind howling. The last one so peaceful, I can hear the quiet hum of the night. Thanks for sharing! Oh - what kind of camera are you using?

  4. Carmon, the camera gets all the credit. It was on the "automatic" setting, and all I did was try to hold it still and zoom in on the moon. I know there's a camera setting for nighttime photos, but I haven't explored it yet. One of these days I'll treat myself to a tripod and try it the right way.

Annie, thanks, I was hoping that ending would be all it was "cracked up" to be.;-)

Duly Inspired, those last two shots were actually taken on the same night. I was out there for quite a while, and a cloud passed over the moon at one point during that period. The camera is a Canon PowerShot S2IS, and I absolutely adore it!

  5. I just saw where a twister ripped through LA. I'm glad to see you have written in your journal and that you're okay.

  6. Thanks for checking on us, Austin. We were lucky, but it was a tragedy for some people.

On a lighter note, check out Sunflower Optimism's post tonight. There's a photo at the bottom that you're gonna absolutely love.

  8. These are great shots Thanks!!!

My Dad used to recite this little poem to me all of the time...
"I see the Moon, the Moon see's me. God Bless the Moon, God Bless me."

  9. These are great, Velvet. I love when the moon looks like your last beautiful shot - it reminds me of a huge pearl hanging in the sky. I don't think your plumber's "moon" could hold a candle to your published moon photos! LOL

You are 57% through! Whew, hard work - you can do it!

  11. aww, I wanted to see the plumber! Great shots, I like the last one best. I've often wanted to take a good moon shot but I guess you have to live somewhere away from streetlights.

  12. Creekhiker, do you have any photos that show the full moon AND the creek? That sounds like it would be so pretty.

4th Sister, I'll bet you think of your father and that poem everytime you see a full moon. What a nice memory.

Sunflower, the full moon does kind of look like a big pearl, now that you mention it. Sure hope I never run into that oyster!

    Patsy, thanks.

Janet, I think artificial lights washed the stars right out of the sky in these photos, but I could see my whole backyard clearly in the bright light of the moon itself. Try it sometime and see what you get.

  13. I love pictures of the moon, and sunsets. All five of my kids were born on a full moon in their respective months, so I feel like we have a special relationship.

  14. Kat, how interesting. what are the odds that all five would be born on a full moon?

  15. Velvet-I love it when the full moon shines on my backyard when it's covered in snow-I hardly need to turn on the floodlights. I'll have to try taking a moon shot sometime...

  16. Oh, Janet, I've lived in the deep South so long now that I'd forgotten the quiet beauty of moonlight on snow. Thanks for sending me that mental image.

  17. Great moon photos Velvet, how did you get the so large? The first "daylight" one and the last one are my favourites. I love taking photos of the moon but mine always seem so small.
Shame about the plumber's moon. :p
